INTRODUCTORY NOTE: THIS IS A SUBMISSION TO THE GAME MOCK UP JAM.

That being the case this is just a prototype and not yet a game but more of a concept of a game I might want to make one day.

Most children in the village of Tudinidae grow up hearing fables from their parents. However, because of a failed experiment by his  distant father, Aesop is going to grow up living those fables! Follow along to this tale for a thrilling adventure RPG only for the Gameboy Color!

(Above is some concept art when I was brainstorming the idea.)

Aesop has 3 main forms in the game that you as the player must transform between to successfully finish your quest and save your little village. At times you must be a fool hardy kid with messy hair- yet once you have gotten yourself into a blunder too big transform into your Tortoise form to tank the hits. If all else fails transform into Rabbit form and swiftly carve a path for your journey to carry on.

The inspiration for this game mock up is I tried to imagine what kind of game my childhood friends and I would want to play on our gameboys after chess club.

If you could make a game what would it be like? I'd love to hear :D

I refuse for anyone to create derivative work from this concept since I may make this game one day... Thank you for understanding.

Has the appearance of something I would genuinely enjoy if I was sitting on a couch with a Game Boy Advance SP. Nice.

Appreciate that! I definitely played a lot of gb games that way! :D

Very, very nice!!!!!

Thank you so much ^_^

Your game mockup looks great! I love the colors and the design. Are you using advanced sprite animation by animating in overlapping parts? How big is your main character sprite?

Thank you so much for your kind words ^_^ I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for it!

For animations I just used aseprite on a frame loop. I made sure each animation loop could be divisible by 3 so everything has a nice timing.

the character sprite in the top down scenes is 16x16 to make it work on a Gameboy resolution but in the side scrolling areas is 16x24 to allow more room for the messy hair to stand out and have character :)

Thanks for explaining that to me! It’s a great idea to create a twist with the Aesop fables. It will be fun to play your game. :)

I really like the look of the bigger sprite. I noticed some game developers use the same sprite perspective for both side-scroller and top-down, but others use a more realistic approach. It’s confusing about what perspective style to use.

Can you animate with more than 3 frames, for character animation states, in GB Studio 3.1? I think it was limited to 2 frames in the earlier version.

oh yes more then 3 frames is definitely possible :D

The hair looks great! :) You’re a pro-pixel hair stylist.

Your top-down sprites look super cute too! I love the kawaii style.

Thank you so much! I have a special love for top down style games :D

It looks like Repugnant Bounty has 3 frame animation loops. So it’s possible! https://skittlesfiddles.itch.io/repugnant-bounty-demo
